Tui Na (pronounced twee-nah) is a massage technique that originated in ancient China. It is one of the world’s oldest systems of bodywork, enduring for more than three thousand years. Tui Na is also one of the four main branches of traditional Chinese medicine, along with acupuncture, qi gong, and Chinese herbal medicine—all of which Herb + Ōhm uniquely offers to patients in downtown Chicago, bringing ancient healing to modern living.

Tui Na translates as “push grasp.” It is a Chinese medicinal massage technique that aims to soften the muscles, increase circulation, increase range of motion, and decrease pain. It’s often used to relieve muscle pain, tension and inflammation, and to heal physical injuries. “Tui Na is based on the theory that imbalances of qi (also known as the body’s life force or energy) lead to symptoms such as pain and illness in the body,” added Wolf. “Very few places in Chicago offer Tui Na massage therapy, because there is so much TCM knowledge and technique required to do it properly. Our patients really respond to the benefits of Tui Na combined with acupuncture for a full body healing experience.”
Tui Na massage stimulates the flow of qi to promote balance within the body using many of the same principles as acupuncture. For example, Tui Na targets specific acupressure points, but practitioners use fingers instead of needles to apply that pressure and trigger the body’s healing process. Tui Na and other forms of massage therapy are often used in combination with acupuncture to achieve optimal results more quickly.
